Ysayle lost her family and her people during the Calamity (1.0's fall) and when she went to Ishgard for assistance, she and other survivors like her were refused. Blessed with the Echo, she was given visions involving dragons and the Saint Shiva from history without knowing truly what they were. Relocating herself to Tailfeather when Ishgard would not take her in, she came to discover what she believed the truth of her visions to mean.
Attempting to save other Ishgardians from the fate she endured, she took on the mantle to lead those who would rebel against Ishgard's older and outdated traditions, she and those who followed her were branded heretics. She became a physical vessel for the primal, Shiva, and later had her beliefs shattered when she was no closer to uniting dragon and elezen, forced to face the bloodletting history of Ishgard.

personality
Ysayle is a very proud woman, forced into independence by circumstance. She can be incredibly stubborn and uncompromising, devoted to her beliefs and deeply impassioned. Ultimately, her intentions are good. She's kind and at times, desperate to protect those around her, as much as she is desperate to be accepted by those who would call her their Lady Iceheart.
She holds a great deal of strength on the outside and can seem untouchable, but beneath that, she holds a grudge against her homeland for their abandonment of her and hosts a great deal of resignation and loneliness. This pain and strife can often escape her in volatile words and behaviour, and as a result of her experiences, Ysayle can seem unwelcoming or unkind from an initial impression. Or even a second and a third one.
